Portraits Travel Through Time

Page history last edited by Kathleen Chenowith 6 years, 5 months ago

If you could travel any where in the world and to any moment in time, where would you journey?

Well known time travelers:

Dr. Who and his Tardis
Back to the Future  http://youtu.be/SR5BfQ4rEqQ
Mr. Peabody & Sherman
H.G. Wells

Artists throughout history have distorted time and portrayed individuals from the present as part of the past.

donor portrait  is a portrait in a larger painting or other work showing the person who commissioned and paid for the image, Sometimes family members are also portrayed.  Donor portraits are very common in religious works of art, especially paintings, of the Middle Ages and Renaissance.  Most often donors are pictured off to the side, in the foreground and on a smaller scale than the main figures.  In this image the donor is actually part of the scene.

Portrait of Madame Recamier an 18th century Parisian socialite painted byJacques-Louise David. Here she is depicted in clothing of the past in neo-classical greek and roman dress.

Artists often mimic artists from the past.

Roy Lichtenstein's George Washington inspired by Gilbert Stuart's GW.  Notice how the photo of Lichtenstein resembles his portrait of George?

Kehinde Wiley 2005, depicts Iced T after the artist Ingres' 1808, portrait of Napoleon I on His Imperial Throne. Notice the laurel leaf crown referencing a more distant past, that of the Roman emperors.
